Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Teeth grinding and clenching, known clinically as bruxism, is done by most people from time to time. Many people are not aware that they have this condition because they grind or clench their teeth at night while asleep. Teeth grinding is caused by stress and anxiety, but also by sleep disorders and abnormal bite or teeth that are missing or crooked. When bruxism becomes a chronic condition, it can lead to worn and broken teeth and severe jaw problems.Tooth Grinding

Teeth grinding is also common in children. An estimated 15-33 percent of children grind their teeth, usually at night time. It is not known why children grind their teeth, but it is thought to be related to improperly aligned teeth or irregular contact between the upper and lower teeth.

Your dentist can fit you with a custom mouth guard to protect your teeth during sleep. If stress is the cause of your grinding, then you will need to find ways to relax! Medications, physical therapy, and stress counseling can all be used to help reduce tension.
